Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to an exciting new school year! We are the second-grade teaching team at Emerson Elementary, and we are so excited to have your child in our classes this year. Second grade is a time of incredible growth, building on foundational skills while fostering independence, curiosity, and a love for learning. We look forward to working together to make this a successful and memorable year for your child.

What to Expect in Second Grade

This year, your child will continue developing important skills in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. Mesa Public Schools' learning milestones for second grade focus on:

📚 English Language Arts

• Strengthening phonics, fluency, and comprehension skills

• Expanding vocabulary and understanding story elements

• Writing detailed narratives, informative pieces, and opinion essays

🔢 Mathematics

• Building fluency with addition and subtraction within 100

• Understanding place value up to 1,000

• Introduction to basic multiplication concepts

• Measuring lengths, telling time, and working with money

🌍 Science & Social Studies

• Exploring life cycles, matter, weather, and energy

• Learning about communities, geography, and historical figures

📝 Social & Emotional Learning

• Practicing teamwork, responsibility, and problem-solving

• Strengthening independence, perseverance, and communication skills
