Advancement Via Individual Determination is a middle school through high school program designed to help prepare underrepresented students for four-year college eligibility. AVID is based on "writing as a tool of learning," collaborative grouping, and inquiry methods.

Career and Technical Education is about doing, creating and innovating. Students in our programs take what they learn and APPLY it to something tangible, like building robots or extracting DNA. Every program is hands on, and every program gives students the foundational skills to move forward in a career pathway.

MPS gifted education department is committed to providing appropriate services for students who require differentiated educational services beyond those normally provided by our regular school program. Service Learning

Junior high students in 7th and 8th grade have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of curriculum-based and extracurricular service learning. The interests and personalities of the schools, teachers and students determine the projects.

School of Inquiry

Smith School of Inquiry is an inquiry based program where learning often combines content areas, and assessment is both work and project based. Classes offer honors level work, although honors level qualification is not required for admission. Students in this program should be curious, motivated, and willing to actively participate in their learning.
